In this article, you’re going to learn everything you need to know about Colombia and Colombian women.
The first thing I want to talk about is Colombia as a country. Colombia is in Latin America and, thus, it’s a Latin country.
But having said that, I believe that Colombia is one of the most advanced and organized countries in Latin America. Having traveled all over Latin America and lived in a bunch of other countries such as Brazil, Argentina, and Peru, I definitely consider Colombia to be one of the most organized and predictable Latin American countries. In fact, Colombia would definitely be my number one choice if I want a very stable form of living, even for a third world region such as Colombia.
IS COLOMBIA SAFE?
The first thing I want to cover is the safety situation. I know that is the topic that’s in most of your minds. You’re wondering whether it’s safe or how safe, or even if it’s a dangerous place to be. And that is something I want to talk a little bit about now.
On a scale of 1 to 10, where I would rate Switzerland or Denmark to be something like 10 and some very very poor country in Africa to be something like zero I would rate Colombia somewhere around 7:00. Meaning that it’s not especially an extremely safe country like Denmark or Scandinavia, but it’s also not a very dangerous place either.
There have been some cases where people have been murdered. But for the most part, these murders were not accidental. These people were involved in various shady activities. Maybe they were borrowing money. Maybe they were dealing drugs or something like this, and I’m actually talking about foreigners for the most part, because those are the news that you typically hear.
In my opinion, if you go into Colombia and you’re not looking for trouble, you’re staying in a decent neighborhood where it’s relatively safe, maybe a big city, but also a smaller city. You know what’s going on, you should not encounter a lot of difficulties in Colombia.
Will get I kidnapped in Colombia?
Another issue that’s on top of people’s minds is the question of kidnapping. I know that when I was planning on going to Colombia, I was very afraid of being kidnapped. I imagined that as soon as I’d land in Colombia’s international airport, I would be immediately kidnapped.
But nothing like that ever happened. As soon as I landed at the International Airport. Well, I did land at the International Airport and surprise, surprise, nothing really happened.
So, while kidnappings were a lot more prevalent ten, twenty, and even 30 years ago, they typically only involve extremely wealthy people, and so if you are somebody that’s a regular average Joe, you’re not the CEO of a big oil company. You’re not worth millions and millions of dollars. You’re not some kind of public figure. You’re going to be fine.
Final thoughts on safety in Colombia. Colombia isn’t the safest country in the world, but it’s certainly not the most dangerous. It’s still Latin America and not Europe. So, there’s a reasonable amount of unpredictability and issues. On the other hand, it’s a reasonably developed and organized country, so you shouldn’t expect “random” acts of violence directed at you for any reason.
Stay out of trouble and everything would be fine.
MY FIRST TRIP TO COLOMBIA
Let me briefly tell you about my first experience in Colombia and my subsequent trips as well. Back in 2008, I was living in Mexico and I wanted to visit Colombia. And so I bought a ticket from Mexico City to Bogota Colombia and I remember how nervous I was boarding the.
Naturally, I imagined that the moment I land at the airport in Bogota I would maybe get kidnapped right outside the airport or I’m, you know, I would take a rogue taxi that would basically take some wrong turn somewhere and I would end up being kidnapped.
As you can imagine, none of this happened. I took a taxi. I took a trip to downtown. To my hotel in a nice colonial neighborhood and I ended up spending a couple of months or a really good time in Colombia. About two years later, I ended up returning to Colombia and living in a place called Medellin. While my first trip was spent a lot of time in Bogota, Medellin is a much more likable city. There’s a lot of other things to do. The weather is a lot nicer, and so it’s also seated that I recommend.
INTRODUCTION TO COLOMBIAN WOMEN
Now that we covered all the bases, let’s talk about Colombian women and I will tell you everything that you need to know. Whether you’re just interested in merely casual dating or you’re looking for something more serious like a long term relationship or even marriage.
Colombian women are just exactly as you would imagine them to be. If I had to describe them, I would do them in three words: feminine, sexy, outgoing, but also flaky (a bit more on that later). Let’s cover all of these points in detail.
Colombian women are feminine
The first is that they’re extremely feminine. They definitely know how to take care of their men. There’s this polarity that’s hard to explain unless you’ve spent a lot of time in Colombia. They like masculine men and so when you combine and so you have a very feminine woman that knows how to dress in a very very feminine way.
That also means she knows how to be submissive to her man, and that is, unfortunately, something that’s been missing in the Western world, especially America, which is why it’s one of the main reasons that a lot of men from the US and other Western countries go to Columbia in order to date and marry women.
Colombian women are traditional
Colombian women are not only feminine, but they are also very traditional and also I would say conservative, although the latter really depends on which part of the country we’re talking about.
So if you are thinking about getting yourself involved in the relationship with the Colombian woman, then you would come to expect everything that is true of a very traditional relationship. And that means the woman takes care of the house she cooks and cleans. Supports you emotionally, but she expects you to go out and to conquer the world, so to speak. So that you can make money, you can feed the family. You can bring bread to the table. Very old school thinking and that is very, very prevalent in Colombia.
Colombian women are also flaky
The last point is probably not the most positive and flattering, but it needs to be mentioned. For the most part, Colombian women can be extremely flaky when setting up dates. That means you have to check and double-check and then be ready when she decides not to follow through.
Later in the article, I will give you further advice on what to do and how to minimize flaky behavior from Colombian women.
DATING COLOMBIAN WOMEN
Let’s talk about a typical date with a Colombian woman.
A typical date with a Colombian woman involves basically asking her out, going out, taking a taxi, and meeting her at her residence, or meeting her at the main location somewhere in the city.
The first day it could consist of things like maybe sitting at a bar. Having a couple of drinks, maybe a quick dinner, and then possibly going out dancing later on. Dancing is a big deal in Colombia and pretty much every single person, or at least the majority of the people. The overwhelming majority of the people know how to dance salsa and several other dances.
Here is a quick tip for you if you don’t know how to dance salsa: my recommendation would be to learn how to do it because it’s definitely going to help you out a lot. Another approach is to go out dancing and ask the girl that you’re with to help you out a little bit.
For the second date, you can always meet her somewhere in the city, have a couple of drinks, maybe at a bar that’s near your apartment. And then see if she would be interested in coming back to your house. Colombian women know that local guys are very aggressive, so she’s not going to be scared by your seemingly aggressive tactics, which she would not be considered as aggressive after all.
The “three-day rule”
Dating in Colombia is very similar to the three-date rule that you have in America and other countries, and what this essentially means is that you need to go out a minimum of two to three days before you are able to seal the deal with the woman.
HOW AND WHERE TO MEET COLOMBIAN WOMEN
Now let’s talk about some ways of meeting women in Colombia. Colombia is a very. Open and friendly country. It’s not uncommon for two people to start a conversation in the middle of the street. And for you to be able to ask for directions everywhere and get very useful help. And that means approaching women on the street is absolutely normal and welcomed.
Whether it’s outside in plain sight, in parks, streets, or in some kind of establishments such as restaurants and bars, should come naturally to you. In fact, one area that you want to avoid meeting women would be the nightlife.
Don’t rely on meeting women at night
That is because, for the most part, nightlife in Colombia is really about going out with the people you know instead of going out and meet other people like the case is in Western countries such as the United States or England. And so unless the bar or the club you’re planning to go is very westernized, which could be true in the capital of Bogota for the most part you should really not rely on nightlife to meet women.
I remember when I lived in Colombia, one of my main mistakes was to wait until nightlife in order to meet women and in the hustle that I was staying in. The owner of the hostel of a 55-year-old man who had moved there and built a life for himself in Colombia had told me that you need to pick up the women during the day. “You just have to pick them up,” he said. And you cannot rely to do that at night.
MEETING COLOMBIAN WOMEN ONLINE
Of course, this article wouldn’t be complete if I didn’t talk about the online dating sites. Online dating is becoming a very prevalent way of meeting women. And so, regardless if you’re interested in meeting a woman out on the street, it always helps to have an online dating account set up so that you can optimize the number of women you meet.
Tinder is very popular and is a great way to meet women. It makes things super easy to simply swipe left and right and be immediately matched with cute women. But for more serious and higher quality women I would highly recommend a site called Colombian Cupid which is a site where a couple of my good friends met their quality girlfriends and their future wives.
WHICH CITIES ARE BEST FOR MEETING COLOMBIAN WOMEN?
Now let’s talk about the different parts of the country and how they differ in the ability to meet women as a foreigner.
Bogota (and the capital region)
The first place I want to cover is Bogota (and the surrounding area). Bogota is the capital and the most cosmopolitan city in Colombia. It’s a place where you’d expect women to be a little bit more westernized, a little bit less traditional.
Part of what makes Bogota special is that a lot of people have migrated to the capital from other parts of the country. Thus, you’re going to find young women living alone or living with roommates, and so they don’t have that family structure in place. That saves a lot of those traditional elements.
This means that the behavior of women is going to be a little bit more promiscuous and exhibiting similar behavior to American women. Of course, there are nowhere near the liberal behavior of the American women, but they’re also not as Conservative as some of the women from the interior of the country. I recommend Bogota as a great city to explore to spend at least a couple of weeks in because even though it’s a capital and it’s also very cosmopolitan. You have people from all walks of life, whether it’s locals who were born and raised there, or whether it’s somebody who came from somewhere else to the capital city to build a better life for themselves.
Medellin
Another great city that I recommend for meeting women would be Medellin. Medellin is Colombia’s second-largest city and the so-called city of eternal spring. The weather is awesome (25C – 75F) year around and the women are some of the prettiest in all of Colombia.
Moreover, the city is extremely organized and easy to live in. I would even rate it above Bogota in terms of less corruption and less hassle and a friendlier city to base yourself in.
The downside to women in Medellin is that they can be extremely standoffish and less likely to be interested in dating foreigners because they know that they’re extremely beautiful and everyone wants them. You can definitely expect more flaking as compared to women in Bogota.
Cali
Colombia’s third-largest city deserves a mention as well. It’s located on the western side of the country and is thus completely different from the rest of the country and cities such as Medellin and Bogota.
The women are also friendlier and easier going than women in both Medellin and Bogota and, that, combined with amazing weather can make Cali a great place to meet amazing Colombian women when you don’t want to deal with the bigger cities and all the issues they entail.
During my two month sojourn in Cali, I had an amazing time and certainly recommend the city to all future travelers.
MOVING TO COLOMBIA FOR LONGER TERM
Some people aren’t just interested in visiting Colombia for a couple of days but want to possibly move there longer term. That is also a great option, and something I want to discuss at depth here.
As mentioned at the beginning of the article, Colombia is one of the most advanced and organized countries in Latin America. Places like Bogota and Medellin are suitable candidates for setting up a base, buying an apartment, and even planting roots—whether it’s for the next few years or decades.
I certainly enjoyed my time in Colombia and can see myself living there long term.
One thing I’d highly recommend is learning Spanish. English isn’t widely spoken, and so knowing even a little bit of conversational Spanish would take you a long way as compared to someone who only speaks a little bit.
Spanish is one of the easiest languages to learn, so it shouldn’t take much effort to understand and even speak the basics of the language.
CONCLUSION: PROS AND CONS OF COLOMBIAN WOMEN
Colombian women are really nothing short of amazing. They’re feminine, sexy, know how to dance, but also know how to whip up a mean “Bandeja Paisa” (a local dish in Medellin).
But they can also be flaky (at least in the beginning dating stages), and extremely cunning later on because they know what they want (like most women out there).
